The company was founded in 1946 by brothers Jack Closner and George Closner. It was originally named Engineered Sales and represented Barber-Greene Co. and Noble Concrete Plants. Revenues were low due to the factory backlogs after World War II. The Barber-Greene line provided most of the business with sales of bucket loaders, vertical boom ditchers, conveyor systems and continuous mix asphalt plants
Our name was changed to Closner Equipment Co. in 1952 and we entered the aggregate field by representing several crusher and screen manufacturers. This was followed by Childers Manufacturing, an early producer of hot oil heaters. We pioneered the use of these hot oil heaters in Texas as a replacement for the steam boilers used to heat liquid asphalt.
In 1960, Smith Engineering Works (later the Telsmith Div/Astec Industries) merged with Barber-Greene and we began selling their wide range of aggregate processing equipment throughout Texas, especially cone crushers.
In the late 1960′s and the early 1970′s, Closner Equipment installed the first automatic screed control systems used on asphalt pavers in Texas. We also led Texas contractors in making the switch to drum mix plants in the 1970′s.
GOMACO Corporation selected us as their dealer in the late 80′s. Gomaco’s full line of concrete slipform pavers, placers, curing equipment, curb machines, and bridge-deck finishers was a perfect fit with our other road paving products. We have won over 25 National awards for our sales and support.
Barber-Greene was acquired by Caterpillar Paving Products in the early ‘90’s and we continued to represent them through 2014.
Dynapac (now a Fayat company) was added in the early 1990′s. Dynapac is the world’s leading producer of vibratory compaction equipment.
Lincoln Windrow Elevators came next. We pioneered the use of elevators equipped with “asphalt re-mix” capability. These devices were widely used by TxDot contractors prior to the advent of Material Transfer Vehicles.
We opened an Austin Branch in 2004. The branch has allowed us to respond rapidly to the Contractors and Governmental customers in the IH35 Corridor.
We built a new Corporate HQ in Schertz, Texas in 2007. The new 8-acre facility is located just off IH35 North. In addition to housing our corporate office and San Antonio store, it also supports our customers in West Texas, the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico.
Roadtec Div. of Astec Industries teamed up with Closner in 2009 to sell and support their line in 120 counties in Texas. Over time our territory was expanded to include all 254 Counties.
LeeBoy and Superior Brooms signed us as their dealer for Southern Texas. We sell Commercial pavers from Carlson and Mauldin in the remainder of Texas.
The Putzmeister line of concrete pumps fit our philosophy to carry the “best of breed”. We were also authorized to conduct warranty repairs on truck-mounted boom pumps.
We opened our DFW Branch in 2012 and built a permanent Regional Service Center in 2017. It serves customers in North Texas, the Panhandle, Northern Louisiana, and Southern Oklahoma.
We added Stewart-Amos Sweeper trucks in 2022 and Bucher Municipal in 2025. Both Mechanical and Regenerative Air models are offered, some on non-CDL chassis. We offer these for rent, RPO and outright purchase.
We opened our Houston Branch in 2023 to serve customers along the Gulf Coast and in Southern Louisiana. In addition to the usual capabilities, the branch can provide major rebuilds and light manufacturing.
In 2024 Astec Industries appointed us as the statewide dealer for their comprehensive line of concrete batch plants, mixers and components. These legacy brands are RexCon, CON-E-CO, and BMH Systems.
We relocated our Austin operations to a new 25,000 square foot purpose-built facility on September 1, 2025. The 6-acre site is located on US290 just East of Elgin, Texas. This state-of-the-art facility will service the Austin-Waco markets, the Hill Country and West Texas.
IN 2026, CLOSNER WILL CELEBRATE 80 YEARS SERVING CUSTOMERS IN TEXAS AND THE SOUTHWEST.
